Lots of Video Game references. A work that is verifiably like this can be said to be Trope Overdosed. There are very, very few tropes that Excel Saga doesn't mock, and pretty much none that get played straight, since each episode is an Affectionate Parody of a different movie or television genre.
And the film makes it all awesome. Doing the movie means certainly disappointing his students and Amy. It appropriates them, it subverts them, it plays them straight, it pays loving homage, and all the while it does its own thing. Slayers skewers all of the classic fantasy cliches with a good healthy dose of pop culture references for laughs.
It helps that the author is a troper. In short, works that are deemed Troperiffic apologize for absolutely nothing and just have fun with every convention or tried idea and taking it to places never thought possible.
